Waste-to-Value and Circular Materials in Aqaba

The problem

Aqaba generates waste streams from tourism, logistics, commerce and households, and today too much of that material is a disposal cost heading to landfill. There is a real opportunity to turn waste into useful inputs, reduce landfill pressure and build circular-economy businesses.

Why it matters in Aqaba

This is the challenge where Aqaba’s evidence is strongest, but also the most physical of the four: any testing has to manage environmental, health, safety, site-access and quality-control risks properly, and the safeguards here are correspondingly the most demanding.

The regulatory friction

Handling, moving and converting waste streams touches environmental, health-and-safety and site-access rules; without a controlled test it is hard to establish which circular models can operate safely and at what scale.

The innovation need

Circular-economy solutions that safely collect, sort, process, track or convert selected waste streams into reusable materials, products or energy-related outputs. Directions include waste sorting and traceability tools; recycling marketplace models; organic waste to compost or bio-inputs; plastic circularity; construction-waste reuse; hospitality waste-reduction models.

The learning question

Can circular-economy and waste-to-value models be tested safely under defined environmental safeguards, and generate evidence for future rules, partnerships or scaling pathways?

Test boundaries and safeguards

A limited pilot focused on one waste stream, on defined sites, with controlled participants and measurable environmental outcomes. KPIs may include waste diverted, contamination rate, emissions avoided, cost per unit processed and compliance incidents.

Environmental and health safeguards throughout; no handling of hazardous material unless expressly approved; clear site responsibilities; insurance where physical operations are involved; and an incident-reporting plan.

What a good answer looks like

A clear definition of the waste stream you target; site-access approval; an environmental risk assessment; health and safety procedures; a chain-of-custody method for the material; and a disposal fallback plan.

The host

Ayla & the garment cluster (ARK)

This challenge comes with real, documented starting points. Ayla has a continuous organic-waste stream and has offered feedstock, a test site, and data about the stream. The garment cluster produces large volumes of fabric waste, more than 80 tonnes a month at one factory alone, accessible through ARK, with factory access and data on the table.
